St Colman's Cathedral in Cobh is an impressive building that stands at the top of the hill with a commanding view of the town and harbour below. The building work started on September of 1868 and continued until 1915.
It was the following year, 1916, that saw the installation of clock and impressive carillon, which is the largest in Ireland and Britain. Originally it contained 42 bells, but over the years this has been augmented to 49, with the most recent additions in 1998. This gives the instrument a range of over 4 octaves.
As the keyboards are located in the belfry is not possible for visitors to the Cathedral to see the instrument.
