BRYAN SIDNEY PRIESTLEY 4.10.1942 – 17.7.2010
It was with great shock and sadness that we learned of the sudden death of Bryan.
It was whilst walking towards the tower in Skibbereen to ring on Saturday evening, 17 July, that Mike Pomeroy (Limerick) received a telephone call from Bryan’s wife, Maureen, to say that Bryan had suffered a stroke and was in Ennis General Hospital. But it was at 8.30 am on Sunday morning that Mike received the second telephone call to say that Bryan had died at 11.00pm on Saturday evening. This sad news put a very dark cloud over the remainder of the weekend.
A Prayer was said in the ringing room of Skibbereen, remembering Bryan, prior to the Morning Service ring.
On Sunday evening a Quarter Peal was rung on the mini-ring at Martin Hough’s house in Drinagh, Co Cork, in memory of Bryan.
Bryan’s funeral Service took place on Thursday 22 July 2010 at 11.30am in St Mary’s Cathedral, Limerick, and prior to the start of the Service proper, Mike Pomeroy, St Mary’s Cathedral, paid a very moving tribute to Bryan and what he meant to the ringers of St Mary’s Cathedral and Mt St Alphonsus, Limerick. The Cathedral bells were rung, half-muffled, prior to and after the Service.
Rev Father Adrian Egan, Mt St Alphonsus, also paid tribute to Bryan, and told that when Bryan was teaching him to ring, he, Father Egan, lost control of the bell and broke the stay. He said to Bryan, “I suppose all beginners do this?”. Bryan replied, “No!”.
Bryan was the Chairman of the Southern District and well known to ringers throughout the Association. Many ringers will have their own special memories of Bryan, as he was a very pleasant and friendly man to all who came in touch with him.
To his wife, Maureen, Tara and the wider family circle, we, his ringing friends in the Irish Association, send our heartfelt sympathy.
Jean Jeffery President I.A.C.R.
